David Neel descends from a family of traditional northwest coast Native artists from the Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka'wakw) tribe, including; his father, Dave Neel Sr., who learned from his mother, Ellen Neel, who was taught by her uncle Mungo Martin, and her grandfather, Charlie James. David apprenticed with Wayne Alfred and Beau Dick, early in his career as a traditional Native artist.

As an Aboriginal artist, working in red cedar, yellow cedar and alder wood, David has carved: totem poles, dug-out canoes, masks, rattles, canoe paddles, talking sticks, and bent-wood boxes. As a Native American jeweller he works with gold, sterling silver, platinum, diamonds, sapphires, rubies and abalone shell to create traditional and contemporary jewellery. First nations pendants, rings, earrings and bracelets can be ordered online, or visit his North Vancouver studio. His custom Native wedding rings and Native engagement rings are worn by many couples across North America.

In recent years he has been doing contemporary Native American paintings on canvas. Some use traditional Pacific Northwest coast Native art principles, to create colorful, contemporary Native paintings. While others, such as his Native Mask series are based on Northwest Coast Native artifacts from museums, such as the Museum of Anthropology, National Museum of the American Indian, the Burke Museum.

He has long been a professional Native photographer, having completed commissions for the Smithsonian Institution and the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, as well as having books published by Douglas and McIntyre, UBC Press and University of Washington Press.

Although Neel is a member of the Kwakiutl tribe, he has studied Coast Salish, Tsimshian, Tlingit and Haida art. He incorporates ideas from many Native Indian artistic styles in his contemporary work. He believes that: tradition is a foundation to build upon, not a boundary to restrain creativity.
