Mungo Martin as a young boy.
This Kwakiutl portrait mask depicts Mungo Martin wearing face paint of the Hamatsa; a secret society of the Kwak'wakawakw, which is still a part of our ceremonies today. Mungo was active in Kwakiutl potlatch culture, was a master carver and is credited with composing over 200 songs. He remains one of the most revered Northwest coast Native artists.
