David’s masks have long been a source of controversy in North West Coast art, due to their contemporary subject matter. Some anthropologists and curators feel that N.W.C. Native traditional artists should work within well defined boundaries.
David spent years travelling and viewing most of the public collections of N.W.C. Native artifacts. He was awarded a prestigious Smithsonian Institution Community Scholar Grant, to research their extensive collections in the Bronx, NY and Washington, DC.
Those years of research changed the way he viewed traditional Native art, and resulted in a body of work, part of which can be seen on this page.
His creative approach can be defined by this statement; tradition is a foundation to build upon, not a boundary to restrain creativity. |
