In this series of paintings David takes Northwest coast Native design in a fresh, unexplored direction. Painting on canvas has become a cornerstone of contemporary Native American art, though few N.W.C. artists work in this media.
Freedom of expression and a desire to work with a wide palette of colors inspired him to paint on canvas, beginning in 1990.
Using the principles of coastal design, such as Kwakiutl and Haida, he paints compositions that challenge the viewer to reconsider what is possible within this style. Challenging the status quo and expanding what we understand to be “traditional” has been the focus of his work for over two decades. |
