Wild Man of the World
This work is inspired by a classic Bukwis mask by Kwakiutl master carver, Bob Harris. This iconic mask has been recreated many times by contemporary Northwest coast artists, and is in the collection of the Chicago Field Museum. Bob Harris is one of the greatest Kwakiutl traditional artists, and he has inspired generations of Northwest coast artists, although his name is almost unknown. Much of his work has never been attributed to the artist, although his work is in many public collections. The Bukwis is a character from Kwakiutl legends, and is also known as the Wild Man of the Woods. He represents a man who has gone wild, and lives in the forest away from society. The dance is still performed in potlatches and Kwakiutl ceremonies today.
